The Makers
Every Royal Nilambur piece passes through the hands of craftsmen who have spent decades mastering a single set of techniques. Not machines. Not factories. People whose grandparents built furniture with the same joints.

The team
Krishnan Rajan
Head Master Craftsman
Experience
42 years
Legacy
3rd generation
Krishnan trained under his father at age 14, learning the deep mortise techniques specific to Nilambur teak that have been refined over 200 years. He oversees all structural joinery at the workshop and personally inspects every joint on dining tables and bed frames before finishing.
Specialty: Mortise-and-tenon joinery, large dining tables

Murugan Nair
Senior Carver & Finisher
Experience
31 years
Legacy
2nd generation
Murugan is responsible for the carved details that distinguish Royal Nilambur's heritage pieces. Each motif is drawn from traditional Kerala architectural patterns and adapted to furniture scale. His finishing work — multiple hand-applied layers of natural teak oil — is what gives each piece its depth of colour.
Specialty: Hand-carved detailing, heritage motifs, surface finishing

Suresh Ramachandran
Master Joiner — Chairs & Seating
Experience
27 years
Legacy
2nd generation
Suresh specialises in the most demanding challenge in teak furniture: seating that is both structurally sound and comfortable. His chair joints are cut to tolerances that require no adhesive — the wood itself provides all the compression strength, which is why Royal Nilambur seating tightens over decades of use.
Specialty: Chair construction, ergonomic seating, bentwood techniques

Arun Pillai
Timber Selection Specialist
Experience
19 years
Legacy
Forest specialist
Before any piece is built, Arun selects the timber. Each plank is assessed for grain density, oil content, absence of knots, and dimensional stability. He works directly with Kerala Forest Department authorised depots and knows which growth seasons produce the densest wood. No piece ships without his approval of the timber.
Specialty: Nilambur forest sourcing, timber grading, grain selection

How a piece is made
Every plank is hand-selected from Kerala Forest Department authorised depots. Only tight-grained, high-oil Nilambur Wild Teak — never plantation wood.
Timber is air-dried for a minimum of 18 months before use. This slow conditioning reduces moisture content and prevents later movement.
All joints — mortise, tenon, dovetail — are cut by hand. No CNC. The slight variation of hand-cutting creates a tighter compression fit than machine tolerances.
Pieces are assembled using only wood joints and natural adhesives. No metal fasteners. This is why our furniture tightens with age.
Three to five hand-applied coats of natural teak oil, sanded between each. The final coat is applied after the piece has been assembled and tested for stability.
Krishnan or a senior craftsman inspects every joint, surface, and dimension before delivery. The warranty certificate is only issued once the piece passes this inspection.
